Oak Leaf staff win awards at JACC NorCal
admin, adminPublished: November 18, 2009
The Oak Leaf staff took home four awards at this year’s Journalism Association of Community Colleges – Northern California division – conference, held at San Jose State University.
The day-long convention featured workshops to help students improve their journalistic skills, as well as informative seminars about the future of the profession.
Throughout the day, aspiring journalists also competed in six on-the-spot contests, the purpose of which was to test the participants’ abilities in different areas of journalism.
The awards ceremony, which took place in Morris Dailey Auditorium on the SJSU campus, featured both the mail-in and on-the-spot competition results.
The Oak Leaf staff, with returning members Andrew Cameron, Allyce Ferrua, Craig Gettman, Michaela James, Isabel Johnson, Molly Rose Livingston, Ben Pack, Michelle Peirano and Kevin Skahan, won General Excellence. This award applies to the quality of the entire newspaper, and was given to only five schools this year.
The staff also shared an honorable mention award for mail-in photo essay. This award applies to any double-page spread designed to tell a story using photos.
In the on-the-spot competitions, Oak Leaf staffers Isabel Johnson and Craig Gettman both took home coveted awards. Johnson won fourth place for the Copy Editing contest. Gettman won second place for the News Layout/Judgement – Tabloid contest.
The next JACC conference will be the state competition in LA April 6-10, 2010.
