A walk on the water

The lady Bear Cubs clawed their way to victory with a fast-paced, intense game Oct. 1. The Cubs did their homework and came out on top with a lopsided 12-4 victory over Delta College.

“We had the most extensive scouting report on this team than in any game we have played so far this year, and it went just the way we scripted it,” said head coach Jill McCormick.

The Cubs charged out strong with a pulse-pounding first half, scoring five goals to Deltas mere one point. As the game progressed, the Bear Cubs turned up their intensity with five goals in the third quarter alone, finishing off
Delta with a conservative two goal fourth quarter.

In her first performance in conference, goalie Kat Musco showed no sign of rust. “I was pretty nervous because I had a hard game with Delta last year, but we were pumped going in because we knew it was gonna be a good game,” said Musco, who allowed only one goal in the first half of the game.

Sophomore Mandy King cranked out a powerful performance, and was once again a key player with four goals and two steals.

“We knew they were a scrappy team, so we had to be ready for anything on defense, and on offense we just had to move the ball quickly and keep our tempo up,” King said.

The Bear Cubs had strength in numbers, and as expected, the primary players rose to the occasion and provided the ferocity needed to lead their teammates to victory.

Sophomores Kelsey Lowy and Melissa Loper both showed their experience with a devastating defensive performance of five steals each.

“We wanted to go out there with a high level of intensity, we knew what they had, and we went out and did what we had to do,” said Loper, who had an equally impressive offensive performance with four goals.

The Bear Cubs dominating defense and high intensity is proving to be a winning combination and will continue to shred any doubts about following last year’s fourth place state finish.
