Don’t listen to Hollywood-Palin is qualified

Melody Karpinski, Contributing Writer
Published: October 30, 2008

What’s all the fuss about Sarah Palin? Well, I’ve got plenty for you. Freedom of the press and freedom of speech have been taken to such new heights that one wonders what happened before Palin arrived on the scene. Yes, she’s from Alaska, the second-least-populated state in the Union and one most still consider “backwoods” country.

But that doesn’t mean she’s an idiot! Some would disagree with that statement, like rock star P!nk, who said if she were to write a letter to Palin it would include the question: “Please point out Iraq on a map.”

One of Obama’s appeals is that he is a “citizen of the world.” What does being a citizen of the world have to do with being president?

I care about being a citizen of America! Whether the Germans love him or not is irrelevant. I want someone who knows what it means to be an American, above and before any “world citizen” ratings. To act effectively on a world stage, you must first act effectively at home.

Hollywood stars, who have already proved that their best trait is acting, not politics, love to say unintelligent and frankly ridiculous things about politicians they don’t support. Take Matt Damon, who said a Palin vice-presidency was “Really scary thing, because I don’t know anything about her.” Because you don’t know anything about her?

Why, then do you consider yourself an expert on her, Mr. Damon? Mr. Damon went on to say that a Palin presidency would be a “disaster.” For one thing, if you don’t know anything about the candidate, then it is really in your best interest not to say anything about her.

For another, John McCain is not dead or in ill health, so why freak out about his impending death? Even some of the media are recognizing this, as abcnews.com reporter Sheila Marikar notes: “Stars comments about her [Palin] are getting downright bizarre.”

Never mind the Hollywood elite. Everyone knows they are wildly liberal, and the likelihood of one of them voting for McCain/Palin is akin to Obama overturning Roe v. Wade. Let’s consider some of these “disastrous” elements that Palin would bring to the vice presidency, and possibly, the presidency.

The Democratic camp’s anti-Palin propaganda uses “no experience” as the primary argument. Yet Sarah Palin has had a more diverse political experience than Obama. Palin spent four years as a city council member, and has nearly six years in executive experience at both the state and local level. This is something neither Barack Obama, nor John McCain can boast. During this time, she has gone after corruption, reduced government spending in Alaska, and managed to save $5 billion of the state’s money.

When the nation and many states are in enormous debt, this is even more admirable. Obama has served six years as an Illinois State Senator, and two years as a U.S. Senator. This gives him experience in the legislative branch of government, not the executive.

Why do you think some Republicans fear a Palin vice-presidency? Because she’s not afraid to go after her own camp. Fighting corruption and injustice is not a party issue; it’s a bi-partisan endeavor that has long been ignored in favor of political popularity.

This is what Sarah Palin is all about. Some of the best presidents have been unpopular, and they have done some of the most world-changing actions for America.

Take Abraham Lincoln, who abolished slavery, yet was hated by many people and was assassinated. It is only in hindsight that he became one of the most inspiring and beloved presidents.

Also, as the mother of a soldier, a Down Syndrome baby, and a pregnant teenage daughter, her experience from the home front provides a unique outlook. I’m not saying parenting makes you qualified for politics, but a woman with a son fighting in a war she supports would consider carefully before prolonging that war.

Another virtue of Palin’s is her decision to raise her handicapped baby. Being directly involved with the challenging, but rewarding efforts of caring for a special-needs child is not something everyone can handle, yet Sarah Palin and her family have.

Some argue that it is selfish to take office with a disabled child, but this is a personal decision that is not the public’s business.

However, since she has chosen to run, her experience as a special-needs mom gives her added insight into the lives of Americans in this situation. This insight will continue to grow as the years progress.

Sarah Palin is aware of the needs of everyday Americans, and the fact that she hasn’t had much time on the national political scene leaves her largely untouched by Washington corruption. In comparing her with Biden, I believe actions speak louder than words.

Her actions in Alaska are what make her an ideal choice for VP, and this is what sets her apart from Biden, who deals more with rhetoric than deeds. Worrying about her foreign policy experience is unnecessary, because she is a nominee for vice president only, and John McCain is the nominee for President. His foreign policy experience is well-known. The McCain-Palin ticket remains a force to be reckoned with, because it has not one, but two, qualified individuals ready to take the White House. See you at the polls!

I have a few problems with this particularly inarticulate portion of your opinion article. First of all, what are the Hollywood elite? How is there an elite subgroup of movie stars? Last time i checked all movie stars are pretty “elite.” Also, like most rich people, many actors in Hollywood are conservative. The Obama “overturning” part doesn’t make much sense either since presidents cant overturn supreme court decisions. And lastly Lincoln was considered an amazing President during his term. Im also assuming he was popular with the slaves.
